Weight loss treatment options
What causes obesity?
Nearly 40% of adults and 19% of youth in the United States, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
New research predicts that in 10 years more than half of their population will be obese.
Being obese puts you at great risk of developing heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol, to name a few, and minimizes mental health and well-being.
The main causes of obesity are:
Lack of physical activity
High carbohydrate/calorie diet.
Certain diseases like hypothyroidism.
A common solution when proper diet and regular exercise is not enough is bariatric surgery.
"Bariatric surgery can cause long-term weight loss and significant reductions in cardiac and other risk factors for some adults with severe obesity," says the American Heart Association.
However, the Mayo Clinic describes that you must meet certain criteria to opt for any bariatric surgery:
When your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or more
If your BMI is 35 or more and you have a serious weight-related health problem, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or severe sleep apnea
When you have not managed to lose weight with diet and exercise
In some cases, you may qualify for certain types of weight loss surgery if your BMI is 30 to 34 and you have serious health problems related to weight.
