Wrinkles treatment options

What causes wrinkles?

Wrinkles appear as creases, folds, or ridges in the skin, mostly in the face and neck, the back of the hands, and the arms.

There is no way to avoid wrinkles as they are part of aging, mainly determined by genetics and environmental causes, especially for light skin people.

There are two main types of wrinkles:

Dynamic wrinkles: caused by repeated facial movements and commonly found between the eyebrows, forehead, upper lips, around the mouth, and the corners of the eyes, referred to as ‘crows feet’.

Static wrinkle: caused by a loss of collagen and elastin from sun exposure, smoking, poor nutrition, skin dehydration, etc.

Here are the most common causes of wrinkles:

  • Age. The bread and butter cause of wrinkles, turkey neck, jowls, and any other condition that involves collagen and elastin. Repeated facial expressions. Before aging kicks in, repeated facial movements and expressions, such as squinting, frowning, or grimacing, lead to fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Sun exposure: UV light from the sun and inhouse treatments speeds the loss of collagen, causing early wrinkling. Sun exposure breaks down the skin's connective tissues, losing strength and flexibility.

  • Smoking. Smoking effects on collagen its terrible, besides many other health-related diseases. It accelerates the normal aging process of your skin, contributing to wrinkles, on top of the reduced blood supply to the face.

  • Alcohol. Dehydrates the skin, which in turn becomes more vulnerable to wrinkles.

  • Poor nutrition. Lack of key nutrients in your body affects the health and strength of your skin. Nutrient-rich foods like oily fish, protein and fresh fruit and vegetables contain the vitamins and minerals your skin needs to maintain it’s youthful appearance.

  • Dehydration. As you already know, collagen is the primary connective tissue in the skin. Dehydration clumps collagen molecules, thus causing wrinkles to form on your skin’s surface.

  • Stress. When your body is put under stress, it releases cortisol, a hormone known to cause premature skin aging and wrinkles.

Other causes include drinking out of a straw, excessive sugar, lack of sleep, and pollution.
